Just as the topic says I am getting new carpet on monday. My tank is a 75 gal so it is pretty much set in stone. The carpet people want us to drain most of the water and leave about 1/4 so they can move it. I really dont want to do this because I dont feel like messing up the biological filter or anything. I thought of getting a big rubbermaid container and draining most of the water into there, but then the problem would be getting it back in. It would be too heavy to lift and pour in, and the siphon wouldn't work because of gravity. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

It is best to save as much water as possible. Also, do not clean your filter. The biobugs will cling to it. You can syphon the water and put it in buckets or milk containers (plastic.) I personally use the buckets that the 30 lbs of cat litter goes into.

With water weighing about 8 pounds per gallon I wouldn't want to use any type of large container. Five gallon plastic pails are what I use and they are darn heavy when full. Remember, you not only have to put the water back in, but probably also have to move the containers you drain it in to. You can't afford to use any thing unwieldy because one false move and you've got a broken tank. I dip my replacement water out of the 5 gallon pail with a 1/2 gallon container until the pail is light enough to handle. It's a slow process, but better to be safe than sorry. After the front glass broke out of my 29 gallon tank I swore I'd never put a tank on carpet again, and I haven't.
