Hey! How's it going? So, I bought a Japanese arch for my tank from my local Pet Co. I love Japanese style; my whole house is a combination of Japanese, craftsman and danish modern, which are all complimentary styles. The danish modern stuff is hand-me-downs from my parents. Oh! and don't forget IKEA! lol! I'd have strictly Japanese, but who can afford that beautiful Japanese furniture? So, anyway! It goes to follow that I would decorate my tank in a Japanese style. But, after a couple of months of this arch being in the water, the paint on it all started to peel off. I couldn't believe what a cheesy job of painting they did! It's so new and I love it and I didn't want to throw it away, so I decided to repaint it. Because I know that there are real Japanese arches like this; they're called "Torii," which means, "gate," I decided to do a little research to find out if there's a traditional way of painting them, and pretty much, there is. I didn't want to spend any money on it, so I just painted it with paints I had. I wanted to paint it bright red, but, I didn't have bright red, which is odd, it's such a standard color, but surprisingly, I had the exact original color, go figure, so I just went with that. But, I'm such a "stickler" for historical correctness, I may get some bright red and repaint the red parts. And, I painted the base the color of my gravel so that it would blend in. So, I thought I'd share with you my repainted project. I still need to coat it in resin to make it waterproof, but otherwise, it's finished.

Here's the famous Torii of Itsukushima on Miyajima Island for comparison.
I wish mine had the cute little roof on the top!

Thank yew! I think I've decided to go with bright red, so I'll have to repost new pics. And, btw.... just a bit of a brag... that's real gold leaf on those little details! I hope that it doesn't have a reaction with the resin, like peel/disintegrate or turn black or something..... :hummm hmmm...
Oh, I thought I'd post a picture of the original arch. You can see that it's starting to peel....

Well, I don't think any paint is safe for fish tanks in and of itself. That's why I seal it in a two-part acrylic resin. I paint the decoration with simple acrylic paint, let the acrylic paint dry for several days to completely dry and harden well, and then apply several coats of resin. Resin is really runny until it hardens, so you have to keep watching it for drips and turning it to keep all areas coated. It takes several coats to get the decoration completely sealed. But, once it's sealed in resin, there is no way the paint on that decoration is coming off. I let the resined decoration sit for a good two weeks to allow it to completely dry and all gases to escape. All hard plastic type aquarium decorations are made from one type of resin or another, so well-dried resin is safe. And I've noticed lately that they are selling artificial plants set in resin bases with rocks or gravel enclosed in the resin. I've repainted decorations and sealed them in resin several times and have had no problems. I've also just made a resin base with gravel in it for my artificial bonsai tree. It's currently in its third day of drying.
Here's some pics of my torii with the original rust/brown color (for comparison) and new ones after changing my mind and going with the bright red. I'm very glad I decided to go with the bright red!
