As I treated one of my tanks for possible fin rot or fungus, days of Melafix wasn't doing the job. I was losing fish left and right, and the fungus just wasn't going away. I stopped treating with Melafix for a few days, and still the fungus persisted. So I decided to turn off the tank light for an entire two days and leave them be (besides morning and evening feedings). I'd done what I could and it was time to let nature take its course. When I returned to my sick tank two days later, I flipped on the light and lo-and-behold, the fungus was gone! The fish were much happier and obviously healthier than when I'd last seen them. It is my belief that fungus is much like algae... light promotes its growth.

So the simple tip is: If you are treating for Fin Rot or Fungus of some sort and you can't seem to shake it, ask yourself this. Is your aquarium light on? Try shutting it off for a few days. This isn't a guaranteed cure, but it may just help.

Light also de-activates some medication, so it's best to leave the lights off and even cover the aquarium.

I would like to thank Bubblesowner for this one. I too treated for fungas, bacterial and spent lots of money on meds. I turned the light off and the white fluff on his tail dissapeared instantly. It has been four days now and still no fluff, he now only has natural light in the day and he seems very happy with this arrangement.

thanks a million for sharing your tip.
